Description

Hydroxypropyl guar gum TR-801

Product Description :

Hydroxypropyl guar gum is a non-ionic polysaccharide polymer chemically modified from natural guar gum, serving as a thickener and water-retaining agent. This product possesses unique rheological properties and excellent viscosity characteristics, suspending fillers in coating systems and preventing filler sedimentation. It also mitigates adverse effects such as dripping and splashing during application, improving the flow and leveling properties of the coating film after application.

Product Advantages

Solubility and transparency: The hydrogen bonding between molecular chains is weakened, allowing it to dissolve quickly in cold water to form a clear and transparent solution, greatly expanding its application scenarios.

Stability and compatibility: Its nonionic properties make it insensitive to electrolytes (salts), maintain viscosity stability over a wide range of pH values and high temperatures, and are well compatible with cationic and anionic raw materials.

Rheological and thixotropic properties: It can form a fluid with unique pseudoplasticity (shear thinning), that is, it is viscous when at rest and thins when stirred or squeezed, providing an excellent user experience.

Application areas

1. Textile Printing and Dyeing: Primarily used as a high-performance printing paste. Its high water retention and excellent compatibility with dyes enable the printing of clear, vibrant patterns, and it is easy to wash off fabrics, saving water and energy. Compared to traditional sodium alginate, it significantly reduces overall costs while improving printing quality, making it the preferred paste for high-end reactive dye printing.

2. Oil and Gas Extraction: In harsh downhole environments characterized by high temperature, high pressure, and high salinity, modified guar gum, as a core thickener in fracturing fluids, effectively suspends and transports proppant (such as ceramsite) deep into rock fractures. Its excellent temperature and salt resistance, as well as low friction characteristics, are crucial for improving the extraction efficiency of unconventional resources such as shale oil and gas.

3. Papermaking and Environmental Protection: In the papermaking process, adding it to the pulp can significantly enhance the bonding force between fibers through bridging, thereby improving the strength of the finished paper. Simultaneously, it is also a highly efficient retention and filtration aid, reducing the loss of fine fibers and fillers, improving paper machine operating efficiency, and reducing wastewater load. In the field of water treatment, its derivatives can be used as environmentally friendly flocculants, effectively adsorbing and flocculating suspended particles and some dye molecules in wastewater.

Suggested usage method

The dosage of TR-801 depends on the formulation, with a recommended dosage of 0.3%-1%.

When using, first disperse TR-801 in clean water, then add alkali to adjust the pH value to 8-9, and the viscosity will be released.

5 FAQs of Hydroxypropyl Guar Gum

Q1. What is Hydroxypropyl Guar Gum?

Answer: Hydroxypropyl Guar Gum (HPG) is a modified polysaccharide derived from guar gum, which is extracted from guar beans (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba). Through a chemical reaction with propylene oxide, hydroxypropyl groups are introduced onto the guar gum backbone. This modification enhances its solubility, stability, and compatibility with other ingredients, especially in aqueous systems and across a wider pH range.

Q2. What are its main applications?

Answer: HPG is widely used as a thickener, stabilizer, and rheology modifier in comestics, oil & gas industry, food industry, textiles & papers.

Q3. Is Hydroxypropyl Guar Gum safe?

Answer: Yes, it is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for use in food and approved by regulatory bodies like the FDA and EFSA. In cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, it is considered non-irritating and biodegradable. However, pure guar gum (unmodified) may cause digestive discomfort in large doses; HPG’s modified form is typically milder.

Q4. How does it differ from regular Guar Gum?

Answer: The key difference lies in solubility and stability:

  • Guar Gum: Natural, cold-water-soluble but may form lumps; viscosity can degrade under extreme pH or high salinity.
  • Hydroxypropyl Guar Gum: Modified to dissolve more smoothly, resist salt and pH variations, and provide clearer solutions. It also has better compatibility with cationic ingredients (e.g., in hair conditioners).
Q5. How should Hydroxypropyl Guar Gum be stored and handled?

A: Store in a cool, dry place away from moisture to prevent clumping. When formulating, disperse HPG in water with vigorous agitation (e.g., high-shear mixing) to avoid lumps. For optimal hydration, allow sufficient stirring time. Always follow manufacturer guidelines for concentration (typically 0.1–2% depending on the application) and compatibility testing with other ingredients.
