Production Method of Magnesium Stearate Powder

Direct Reaction Method

First, get stearic acid and magnesium oxide or magnesium hydroxide. Mix stearic acid with an excess of magnesium oxide or hydroxide in a reaction vessel. Heat the mixture, usually around 80 – 100°C. Stir it well during heating. The stearic acid reacts with magnesium compound. The reaction formula is something like 2C₁₇H₃₅COOH + MgO → (C₁₇H₃₅COO)₂Mg + H₂O. After the reaction, cool the product and grind it into powder.

    Saponification Method

Take stearic acid and react it with an alkali like sodium hydroxide to make sodium stearate. Mix stearic acid with sodium hydroxide solution. Heat and stir for saponification. Then, add a magnesium salt solution, such as magnesium chloride. Sodium stearate reacts with magnesium chloride. The reaction is 2C₁₇H₃₅COONa + MgCl₂ → (C₁₇H₃₅COO)₂Mg + 2NaCl. Filter the resulting precipitate, wash it, and dry it. Finally, grind the dried product to get magnesium stearate powder.

Storage Condition of Magnesium Stearate Powder

      Use Sealed Containers

Put magnesium stearate powder in tightly closed plastic bags or containers. This keeps out air and moisture.

Pick a Dry and Cool Place

Store it in a dry area. Humidity should be low. The right temperature is around 15 – 25°C.

Keep Away from Heat and Sunlight

Don’t store near heat sources like radiators. Also, stay away from direct sunlight. Heat and sunlight can change the powder.

            Separate from Reactive Substances

Don’t let it touch acids, bases, or strong oxidizers. These can react with the powder and spoil it.
