Production Method of Sodium Oleate

  1. Raw Materials Preparation

Get oleic acid and sodium hydroxide ready. Oleic acid is a common fatty acid, and sodium hydroxide is a strong base.

  1. Saponification Reaction

Pour oleic acid into a reaction vessel. Then, slowly add a sodium hydroxide solution. Stir well during the addition. The chemical reaction is like this: oleic acid reacts with sodium hydroxide to form sodium oleate and water. The equation is C₁₈H₃₄O₂ + NaOH → C₁₈H₃₃O₂Na + H₂O.

  1. Heating and Stirring

Heat the reaction mixture gently. Keep stirring at the same time. This helps the reaction happen faster and more completely. The recommended temperature is around 60 – 80°C.

  1. Purification

After the reaction, cool the mixture. You might see some impurities. Filter the mixture to get rid of these. Then, wash the filtered product with a bit of water to make it purer.

  1. Drying

Put the purified product in a dryer. Dry it at a suitable temperature, like 40 – 50°C. This removes the remaining water, and you’ll end up with solid sodium oleate.

Storage Condition of Sodium Oleate

Sealed Storage

Store sodium oleate in well – closed containers. Plastic or glass containers work well. This keeps air and moisture out. Air and moisture can make it go bad.

    Cool Place

Put it in a cool area. Temperatures around 15 – 25°C are good. High heat can cause it to break down.

      Dark Storage

Keep it away from light. Sunlight can change its chemical makeup over time. So, store it in a dark place.

        Separate Storage

Don’t store it near acids or strong oxidizing substances. They can react with sodium oleate and ruin it.
