Description of Sodium Silicate Powder

Sodium silicate, commonly known as Paohua alkali, is an inorganic substance with a chemical formula of Na2O·nSiO2. Its aqueous solution is commonly known as water glass, which is a mineral binder. It is a soluble inorganic silicate with a wide range of uses.

Features of Sodium silicate

Sodium silicate, also called water glass, has several key traits. First, it dissolves easily in water. The solution is usually clear or slightly yellow. It feels slippery to touch. Second, it has strong alkalinity. The solution can react with acids to form silica gel. For example, mixing it with hydrochloric acid makes a jelly-like substance. Another feature is its adhesive power. When dry, sodium silicate acts like glue. It can bond materials such as paper, wood, or metal. This property is useful in making cement and adhesives. Sodium silicate also resists high temperatures. It doesn’t burn or melt easily, so it’s used in fireproof coatings. Additionally, it has good耐腐蚀性. It can protect surfaces from chemicals like sulfuric acid. However, sodium silicate reacts with carbon dioxide in air. Over time, it forms a hard silica layer. This process can cause clumping if not stored properly. Different types exist based on concentration. High-concentration solutions are thick, like syrup. Lower concentrations are thinner. Each type suits different uses, from construction to soap making.

 Application of Sodium Silicate Powder

 1. It is used as an activator for fly ash cement to improve the activity of fly ash, thereby improving the compressive strength and flexural strength of fly ash admixture cement; or increasing the amount of fly ash in cement, thereby increasing the Cement production and lower cement production costs. Powdered instant sodium silicate can also be used as quick-drying agent and reinforcing agent for ordinary cement.

 2. Used as drilling cuttings coagulation agent and shale anti-swelling agent for silicon-based drilling fluids, bentonite slurry cemented leakage plugging agent and colloidal cement leakage plugging agent, precipitation chemical water plugging agent for oil and gas wells, and oil and gas well swelling agent Type water blocking agent.

 3. It is used as a binder for unshaped refractory materials such as kiln gunning material, castable, acid-resistant cement, etc.; a mixture of foundry industry, ceramic industry, paint industry and thermal insulation material; thickener in oil production industry.

4. It is the main component of washing powder.

Production Method of Sodium silicate

1. Dry Process

Mix sand (SiO₂) and soda ash (Na₂CO₃). Heat the mixture in a furnace at 1300–1400°C. They react to form sodium silicate. The reaction is:

Na₂CO₃ + SiO₂ → Na₂SiO₃ + CO₂. Cool the solid product, then grind it into powder.

2. Wet Process

Dissolve sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in water. Add crushed silica sand. Heat the mixture under pressure (1–2 atm) at 150–200°C. Stir until the sand dissolves. The reaction is:

2NaOH + SiO₂ → Na₂SiO₃ + H₂O. Filter the solution to remove impurities. Evaporate water to get liquid or solid sodium silicate.

3. Acid-Neutralization Method

React sodium silicate solution with an acid (e.g., sulfuric acid). This forms silica gel. Wash and dry the gel. Heat it to remove water, leaving pure SiO₂. Mix SiO₂ with NaOH solution again to adjust the ratio.

4. High-Pressure Hydrothermal Synthesis

Combine NaOH, SiO₂, and water in a sealed reactor. Heat to 200–300°C under high pressure. Stir for several hours to form sodium silicate crystals. Cool and filter the solution.

Storage Condition of Sodium silicate

Sealed Containers

Store sodium silicate in tightly closed containers. Use plastic drums or glass bottles to prevent air and moisture from getting in.

Cool, Dry Place

Please keep it in a dry area with low humidity. Avoid storing near water sources or damp environments. The ideal temperature is between 15–25°C.

Avoid Heat and Sunlight

High temperatures can cause the solution to thicken or solidify. Store away from direct sunlight, radiators, or other heat sources.

Separate from Reactive Substances

Do not mix with acids, bases, or strong oxidizing agents. These can trigger chemical reactions that damage the product.

Handle with Care

Wear gloves when handling. Spills should be cleaned up immediately to avoid slippery surfaces.

Label Clearly

Mark containers with the product name, concentration, and date. This helps prevent confusion and ensures proper usage.

 5 FAQs of Sodium silicate

 Q1

What is the difference between sodium silicate powder and potassium silicate powder?

Answer: The main difference between sodium silicate powder and potassium silicate powder is their chemical composition and properties. Sodium silicate is a compound of silicic acid and sodium, while potassium silicate is a compound of silicic acid and potassium. In terms of performance, potassium silicate has greater fire resistance and stability in certain applications.

Q2

Is sodium silicate powder harmful to human body?

Answer: Sodium silicate powder itself is not directly harmful to the human body, but it is a strongly alkaline substance that can cause irritation and burns when it comes in contact with the skin or eyes. Therefore, when working with sodium silicate powder, you should wear protective gloves and glasses and ensure that the operating environment is well ventilated.

Q3

What is the production process of sodium silicate powder?

Answer: The production of sodium silicate powder usually involves steps such as crushing, mixing, and melting of quartz sand and soda ash (or caustic soda). The molten liquid is cooled, crystallized, dried and pulverized to finally obtain sodium silicate powder.

Q4

How does the purity of sodium silicate powder affect its performance?

Answer: The purity of sodium silicate powder has an important impact on its performance. High-purity sodium silicate powder has better stability and higher bonding strength, providing better performance. Therefore, the purity of sodium silicate powder needs to be strictly controlled during production and application.

Q5

What are the applications of sodium silicate powder in the field of environmental protection?

Answer: Sodium silicate powder has certain applications in the field of environmental protection. For example, it can be used as a flocculant in wastewater treatment to help remove suspended solids and pollutants from the water. In addition, it can also be used to make environmentally friendly building materials and fireproof materials, helping to reduce environmental pollution and improve building safety.
