Production Method of Zinc Stearate Powder

1. Direct Synthesis

Mix stearic acid with zinc oxide in a reactor. Heat to 120–140°C. Stir until they react:

2C₁₇H₃₅COOH + ZnO → (C₁₇H₃₅COO)₂Zn + H₂O. Cool and grind the product.

2. Double Decomposition

Dissolve zinc sulfate in water. Add sodium stearate solution. Stir to form a precipitate:

ZnSO₄ + 2C₁₇H₃₅COONa → (C₁₇H₃₅COO)₂Zn↓ + Na₂SO₄. Filter, wash, and dry the powder.

3. Melt Method

Heat stearic acid until it melts. Add zinc oxide slowly while stirring. React at 100–130°C. Cool and crush the solid product.

4. Solvent Method

Dissolve stearic acid in hot ethanol. Add zinc hydroxide powder. Stir to react:

2C₁₇H₃₅COOH + Zn(OH)₂ → (C₁₇H₃₅COO)₂Zn + 2H₂O. Remove ethanol by evaporation. Dry the residue.

Each method controls factors like temperature and purity to meet different industry needs.

Storage Condition of Zinc Stearate Powder

Store zinc stearate powder in sealed containers like plastic bags or glass jars. This stops moisture and air from getting in. Keep it in a dry place with humidity below 40%. Use desiccants inside the container if needed. High humidity can cause clumping. Avoid storing near heat or sunlight. Temperatures should stay between 15–25°C. Heat may change its texture or properties. Separate it from acids and strong oxidizers. These can react and damage the powder. Handle with gloves to prevent skin contact. Label containers clearly with the name and date. Check storage areas regularly to ensure conditions stay good.

5 FAQs of Zinc Stearate Powder

Q1:

What is the recommended dosage of Zinc Stearate Powder in plastic applications?

Re: The recommended dosage of Zinc Stearate Powder in plastic applications varies depending on the type of plastic and the desired effect. Typically, a dosage of 0.5% to 2% by weight of the plastic is sufficient to achieve the desired lubricating and processing aid effects.

Q2:

Is Zinc Stearate Powder safe to use in food packaging materials?

Re: Yes, Zinc Stearate Powder is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in food packaging materials. It does not migrate into food products and is suitable for contact with food.

Q3:

Can Zinc Stearate Powder be used in water-based systems?

Re: Zinc Stearate Powder is not soluble in water and therefore not suitable for use in water-based systems. It is primarily designed for use in organic solvents or non-aqueous systems.

Q4:

How does Zinc Stearate Powder affect the mechanical properties of plastics?

Re: Zinc Stearate Powder can slightly reduce the mechanical properties of plastics, such as tensile strength and impact resistance. However, the reduction is usually minimal and can be compensated for by adjusting the formulation or processing parameters.

Q5:

What are the storage recommendations for Zinc Stearate Powder?

Re: Zinc Stearate Powder should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. It should be kept in airtight containers to prevent oxidation and maintain its properties.
