What is Molybdenum Disilicide?

Molybdenum Disilicide is a molybdenum silicon compound, also known as molybdenum silicide, with the molecular formula MoSi2 and molecular weight of 154.13.

Since the radii of the two atoms are not very different and the electronegativity is relatively close, it has similar properties to metals and ceramics. With a melting point of up to 2030, it is electrically conductive and can form a passivation layer of silica on the surface to prevent further oxidation at high temperatures. Its appearance is grey metallic, derived from its square alpha crystal structure, it also has a hexagonal shape, but unstable molar modified crystal structure. Insoluble in most acids, but soluble in nitric and hydrofluoric acid. 

 

Molybdenum Disilicide Properties

Crystallographic properties: tetragonal crystal structure, the density of 5.9-6.3g/cm. Pure molybdenum disilicide has no phase transition before reaching the melting point and has good thermal stability. Within the upper limit of its effective temperature range, the rise and fall of temperature will not be destroyed by the change of crystallographic properties.

 

Thermodynamic properties: melting point up to 2030, high thermal conductivity (similar to SiO), thermal expansion coefficient is small, these characteristics are necessary conditions for the production of high-temperature heating elements or thermocouple protection tube, and is conducive to increasing the thermal shock resistance of its products. 

 

Electromagnetic properties: low resistivity (2×10-5 ω ·cm), high conductivity, and a good conductor. The material is an excellent material for making heating elements, thermocouple thermal electrodes, and temperature protection tubes (insulation should be paid attention to when making thermocouple protection tubes). 

 

Mechanical properties: tensile strength and bending strength is not lower than in general metal materials, and in some oxide materials (such as Al2O3), hardness and compressive strength are higher than in metal. Compared with metal, the biggest disadvantage lies in poor impact toughness, so it belongs to brittle materials like general ceramic products.  Therefore, in the actual production process, a small amount of metal binder is added without affecting its high-temperature oxidation resistance to produce cermets. 

 

Chemical properties: The chemical state is acidic, at room temperature with the vast majority of acid and base being insoluble, in addition to oxide ceramics, MoSi2 is all refractory compounds in the antioxidant stability of one of the highest. The solubility of silicon in molybdenum is about 1% (1800), which determines the oxidation stability temperature of MoSi2 below 1700.

 

What is molybdenum disilicide used for? 

Molybdenum disilicide is used in high-temperature oxidation-resistant coating materials, electric heating elements, integrated electrode films, structural materials, composite reinforced materials, wear-resistant materials, structural ceramic bonding materials, and other fields. Distributed in the following industries:

Energy chemical industry: electric heating elements, high-temperature heat exchangers for atomic reactor units, gas burners, high-temperature thermocouples and their protective tubes, a crucible for melting vessels (for smelting sodium, lithium, lead, bismuth, tin, and other metals).

Microelectronics industry: MoSi2 and some other refractory metal silicides Ti5Si3, WSi2, and TaSi2 are important candidate materials for large-scale integrated circuit gates and interconnect membranes.

Aerospace industry: as a high-temperature antioxidation coating, has been widely and deeply studied and applied.  In particular, materials used as turbine engine components, such as blades, impellers, burners, tail nozzles, and seals. 

Automotive industry: Turbocharger rotors, valve bodies, spark plugs, and engine parts for automotive turbine engines.
