What is in stainless steel?

Stainless steel is a kind of ferroalloy that resists rust. Compared with steel, it contains at least 11% chromium in addition to iron and carbon, which makes stainless steel have antioxidant properties. In addition, different kinds of stainless steel may also contain other different elements, such as nickel, molybdenum, manganese or copper.

How does stainless steel keep from rusting?

When stainless steel is exposed to the atmosphere, chromium in stainless steel combines with oxygen to form a thin and stable passivation layer of chromium oxide (III) (Cr2O3). The passivation layer protects the internal steel from oxidation, and if the surface is scratched, it will be quickly reformed.

The passivation layer is different from electroplating. Some metals are plated with zinc, chromium or nickel for surface protection. In these cases, once the scratch penetrates the coating, the benefits of the coating will be lost. The chromium inside stainless steel provides more than just this surface protection. Whenever it is exposed to air, it produces its passivation film. Therefore, even if the stainless steel is deeply scratched, the passivation layer will heal itself.

Is stainless steel magnetic?

It is not feasible to use magnets to determine whether some metals are stainless steel. Some grades and types of stainless steel are magnetic and some are not--depending on the elements in the alloy.

The grade of austenitic stainless steel is not magnetic. Martensitic and more common Ferritic stainless steels, such as 430, are magnetic. Dual-phase steel is a mixture of austenitic steel and Ferritic steel, which is usually slightly magnetic. Magnets can be firmly fixed to Ferritic steel. But on dual-phase steel, it may be easier to slip.

Common stainless steel grades:

Ferritic stainless steel: 430,444,409.

Austenitic stainless steel: 304, 302, 303, 310, 316, 317, 321, 347.

Martensitic stainless steel: 420, 431, 440, 416.

Duplex stainless steel: 2304, 2205.

What is stainless steel usually used for?

Stainless steel has become a commonly used steel widely used in building management and daily applications because of its strength, resistance and reliability. And stainless steel has the advantages of long service life, low maintenance cost and recyclability.

Kitchen utensils

Stainless steel is widely used in cooking utensils, kitchen utensils and tableware. This is because it is wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant, and does not affect the flavor of food when used in food storage or production. Due to the level of resistance, foods with high acidity will not cause damage.

Lighting

There are different grades of stainless steel, two of which are particularly popular in indoor and outdoor lighting products. Stainless steel 316 is a marine stainless steel containing molybdenum. This element ensures that stainless steel has higher salt water corrosion resistance. The more commonly used stainless steel grade is 304. It still has corrosion resistance and is suitable for most environments, but not for coastal areas.

Medical treatment

The common use of stainless steel is in the production of dental and surgical instruments. This material is used because of its corrosion resistance and because it is easy to disinfect. This makes stainless steel suitable for medical environments because it ensures the sanitary efficiency of the goods.

Architecture

Because stainless steel is a strong and durable metal, it is often used in the construction of modern buildings. It is used for indoor and outdoor design, from the railway station to the top of cooking utensils and splash-proof panels.
